Money talks and it's nearly always saying "Good-buy"
| EXPRESSION | DEFINITION | TRANSLATION |
| in the black | making money | с прибылью |
| in the red | losing money | с убытком, "в минусах" |
| to break even | not showing a profit or loss | "сработать" без убытков |
| to "turn" a profit | to make a profit | "выйти" на прибыль |
| to go belly up | to go bankrupt | обанкротиться, "сдохнуть" (о фирме) |
| a bull market | a rising market | "растущий" рынок |
| a bear market | a falling market | падающий рынок |
| to "float" a loan | to give a loan | ссудить заем |
| to give a kickback | to pay someone a fee from part of the payment | дать взятку, "подмазать" |
| to use "plastic" | to use a credit card | расплачиваться кредиткой |
| the bottom line |
the final amount or result (the bottom line of the balance sheet) |
When you start a new business, you are often in the red at least for the first few months, sometimes even years. If you are lucky and work hard; after a couple of years your company may break even, or even be in the black.
To turn a profit in a new venture, you often need someone to float you a loan, such as a rich uncle. When your company starts to show a strong bottom line, a bank might be willing to extend credit to you, especially if there is a bull market and business is strong.
In bear markets, especially if there is rising inflation, banks may be cautious about making long-term loans, especially since new business owners often go belly up in the first year.
Of course, if you have a credit card with a high credit limit, you can always use plastic to help you overcome these difficult times. But watch out: Interest rates on credit card loans are typically very high.
