My English and me

Here is a story of us – my English and me.

My love for English is innate so I used to take Him for granted at first. But He was wise and patient enough to wait till my feelings would grow with time and develop into a true deep love.

It happened when I was working for the Internet company. Dealing with foreign clients, we spent days and nights talking business and working out efficient solutions to handle eventualities throughout the projects development. I was certain my partner would never let me down being at hand to provide reasonable explanations to the team, to soothe clients and convince them that notwithstanding current delays we would meet the deadline and their expectations.

Strange as it may seem, it was mutual understanding that put discord in our relations with English. I caught myself resorting to formulaic expressions and “takeaway” solutions, thereby making the communication effective but template-like and lacking in vitality. Luckily, I was able to resist the temptation of oversimplification and get on in search of innovative approaches. Afterwards to keep my English in suspense I decided to take time and … maternity leave. Thus we parted, yet keeping in touch since my ex-boss needed to have some materials translated.

Notwithstanding the E-century, nothing will ever fully substitute for the luxury of real communication.

So English and I started dating again. My husband has never grown suspicious as we have always had an alibi teaching at “Master Class”. And the pleasure I get observing my students’ progress disguises my excitement about the time spent at work with English. If not for these dates, this time it would be my life that would lack vitality and vigour.

Бодякшина ЕленаGone are the days of a monolingual romance – polilingual love awaits!

Love is passion, obsession, someone you can’t live without. How do you find love? You forget your head and listen to your heart…The truth is there is no sense living your life without this. You have to try.… Lightening can strike any moment!...

And it stroke when I was eight. I can clearly remember the day when I was offered a role of a mouse in a school theatre play staged by our teacher. The stage version of a famous Russian fairytale was performed in English. Being an “ingénue” I was overwhelmed with stage fright to say nothing of my intense longing to pronounce correctly the lines in English. I stepped on the stage: my heart leapt to my mouth…

Who could have thought that those emotions were the beginning of a life-long romance with The English Language. And the small mousy girl after finishing school will enter The Linguistic University and take up the career of an English teacher. Had I been told that I would travel abroad, teach people English I would have never believed them.

Looking back over my shoulder I can say that English is my courteous guru which has helped me broaden my perceptions of life and also made it easy to understand how others view life. In other words it teaches me tolerance which leads to having good relations with people of other culture, faith and different ethnic background. I take English for a human-friend with his feelings, skills, way of thinking and very special sense of humour which is all about intelligence and grace. This friend sustains the desire to be smart enough not to stop improving yourself from all sides and by all ways.

Teaching English sphere brought me in touch with talented professionals and the experience to build from. I’ve met a lot of people for whom the English language is a lifestyle and a means of career prospects. They are entangled with it by sheer force of love and have nothing to do but keep the pace. This enslavement is not a burden but a sweet surrender. You forget your head and listen to the music of English. Anyone who has ever been insatiable of learning anything new will definitely welcome the affection.

Once I worked at school

Last year I had a chance to work at school. We discussed the topic “Weather in different countries”. We studied various parts of the world so that the students would feel as if they knew them a little.

I liked the children and was always ready to have a joke with them, so they learnt a lot while at the same time having fun.

Just before Christmas I was having the first lesson with the sixth year pupils, and to start with I decided to ask them some general questions about the weather forecast so that I could see how much they knew. One of the students, a fair-haired boy with freckles sitting at the last desk, was smirking at me as if he was the only one who knew the answer. The boy Mike by name tended to be rather arrogant and conceited. Suddenly he asked me distrustfully “Where is Turkey?” “Turkey?” I hesitated for a while. “You’ll find it on the Christmas dinner table.” “Very funny”, the boy remarked in an unfriendly manner, while the class was giggling noisily. Mike could be a little moody, but basically he was pretty nice. Then I joined happily in the class’s loud laughter.

My first “baptism of fire” at school hit the mark. Many times when I was in a fix I got over the hump thanks to English.
